Selective luminous sources
Bloom begins from meaningful highlight energy and local contrast, reducing the response on flat white clouds, walls and other broad surfaces.
Soft optical spread
Bloom is the soft mist that appears when bright light spreads through a lens, filter or small-format film system into neighbouring darker areas. It should soften the boundary of a luminous source without turning every white object into a brighter patch.
The response
Bloom begins from meaningful highlight energy and local contrast, reducing the response on flat white clouds, walls and other broad surfaces.
A multi-scale spread moves gently beyond the source boundary into darker surroundings. The result feels more like optical diffusion than a sharp digital blur.
The original source is protected while the diffused contribution is energy-controlled, preventing new clipping and the harsh white texture caused by additive glow.

Restraint matters
Bloom is not general softness, haze or exposure gain. If the center of a cloud becomes brighter, if fine highlight texture turns blocky or if the whole frame loses contrast, the selection or energy contribution is too broad. Use contrast and exposure controls for the base image instead.
